It’s back to school time. We are entering into our eighth year of homeschooling, which means this is my first go at homeschooling an eighth grader. With high school just around the corner, we made some curriculum choices based on fun and interest. I figure next year we will have to start thinking about transcripts and preparing for after high school, so we are taking this year to kind of enjoy our relaxed homeschool. Without further ado, here are our eighth grade homeschool curriculum choices for 2021-2022.

Math
We will continue with Math U See this year. Carter will finish up pre-algebra and move on to Algebra 1. Math U See is a solid program, but teaches very step by step and it just works for us.
Writing
Essentials in Writing. This is Carter’s favorite writing program and after attempting to do Sonlight language arts last year, he was begging to go back to EIW. Essentials in writing just makes sense and doesn’t give an assignment the students don’t yet have the tools for. We love EIW and I don’t see us using anything different for high school.
Literature
This will be our first year using Essentials in Literature. Since we love Essentials in Writing so much, we decided to give this one a try. We’re looking forward to beginning this curriculum and I’m looking forward to seeing how it works for Carter.
Spelling
We will continue with Spelling You See this year. It was a great fit for our homeschool last year, and spelling has always been a weak area for this kid. Spelling instruction may just continue even through high school so things will be firm and cemented for him.
I am also planning to add a word roots book to his spelling/language arts instruction, but I haven’t chosen one yet.
History
I gave Carter the choice to continue with Sonlight for history or choose something else. Ultimately he chose Modern American and World History from Beautiful Feet Books. I am thrilled with this choice and am looking forward to having a smaller pile of books to manage this year.
He also asked to add a hands-on component for history (he’s always had a kinesthetic learning style), so he will be using the Inquisikids lapbook kit from Sonlight. The lapbook kit looks similar to the kits from Homeschool in the Woods, but everything comes pre-printed in a box so it saves me some time.
Science
This was one of our fun curriculum choices for the year. Carter decided on Historical Geology from Master Books. He said he was a little weary of the typical science programs and learning the same things from year to year, so we chose something fun and different. It looks like it will be a great program and a fun year learning about the geology of America’s national parks.

Art
We went with another choice from Master Books and will use their Living Art Lessons. We are pretty excited to incorporate some hands-on art into our homeschool. In the past we have focused on learning about artists and picture study, so this will be a fun change.
Logic
Carter will use Introduction to Logic from Master Books. He was really excited about this course and actually started it last spring. I would say this is more of an apologetics course than it is logic, but still a great program.
Other Electives
We are continuing with the My Tech High program this year and Carter is doing Music (guitar and voice lessons) and a Makerspace class with KiwiCo.
Those are all of our eighth grade curriculum choices for the year. I would love to know what grades you are homeschooling this year and what curriculum you are using. Tell me in the comments below.
