My youngest is starting sixth grade! He’s officially a middle schooler. I’ve decided to keep things simple this year, as that seems to work best for him. He does a lot of learning on his own outside of school time, so simple school works well. Here are our sixth grade homeschool curriculum picks!

Math
We switched Peyton over to Math U See part way through last year and we will continue with that. We tried to make Math Lessons for a Living Education work, but the program is just too disjointed and illogical. He actually asked if he could switch to Math U See, so that’s what he’s doing.
Language Arts
This is our last year using Language Lessons for a Living Education. The program ends at level six, so I will have to find something else after this. To be honest, he is quickly losing interest in this one. This was a favorite in years past, but it pretty much repeats the same thing every year and I think it’s no longer engaging him. He will finish this final level, mainly because we have it and I don’t know what I’m going to have him do next.
Spelling
Spelling You See worked great for us last year, and we will keep going with it. I really like the copywork/dictation approach and it works well for him.
Geography/Social Studies
Peyton loved the U.S. Geography and Social Studies he did last year, so this year he is doing World Geography and Cultures. I love teaching history, but this child doesn’t like learning history in the traditional sense, so social studies are great for him. He gets history in small snippets as he studies world cultures, and also learns a lot from reading biographies and listening to audio books/dramas.
Science
Zoology from Master Books is what he is using for science this year. He loves animals and is excited about the Aquarium Adventure book. We also have a zoo pass and will take many trips to observe and study the animals in that environment.
Art
He will be joining his brother for Living Art Lessons. Peyton loves all things art, but hasn’t done much art instruction, so we’ll see how it goes. I think so many of us have a habit of taking something our kids love and schooling it up so it becomes work and not fun. Since art is a dessert subject I will definitely be flexible with it. There are some really fun project ideas in this curriculum, so I’m hoping it will be enjoyable.
Other Electives
Peyton is continuing to take violin lessons this year. He is also doing a Makerspace class through My Tech High that includes Kiwi Crates.
That is the bulk of our sixth grade curriculum. There will also be 4H projects and lots of time spent reading books, but this is it as far as our sixth grade homeschool curriculum.
