I am excited to bring you this full review of the A+ Interactive Math; Family Math Package from A+ Tutorsoft. A+ Interactive Math is an online math option that allows students to work at their own pace, at their own level, and is completely self grading. The Family Math Package allows you access to all available lessons, for all available grade levels, for up to ten students. This is a very flexible program and you can place your student at whatever level is appropriate for them. Since the Family Math Package gives you access to all levels, if you find that you didn’t place your student in the appropriate grade level, you can easily move them up or down as needed.
You will also have access to a parent account that allows you to monitor your students’ progress right from the parent dashboard. This is a mostly independent math program with very little parent involvement required. The lesson planning, teaching, testing, and grading are all done for you!
Grade Level/Age
The Family Math Package from A+ Interactive Math is a complete math curriculum for grades 1-6, as well as Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1.
Homeschool Style
The way this program teaches math would best be described as a traditional style. It is a mastery math program without much review built into the daily lessons. The program is flexible, however, so the student can complete lessons more
than once if they need more review of a concept. There are also several worksheets available for each lesson that you can have your students complete for review as needed.
How to Use
The lesson plans give a complete schedule for your student to follow. Each lesson starts with a multimedia video that teaches the concept. The student watches the multimedia lessons, and then proceeds to the Interactive Problem Solving section. This is basically an interactive question and answer session so your student can see how well they understood the multimedia teaching. After they complete the Interactive Problem Solving, they would complete a worksheet, then proceed to the exam and review as needed. These steps are typically done over the course of a week with the exception of the exams. Exams are done at the end of each chapter and aren’t necessarily scheduled every week. There are also scheduled review weeks and cumulative exams which cover all of the chapters learned so far.
This program can be done completely online. Even the worksheets are done online making this a program that can be done anywhere, as long as there’s an internet connection.
Worldview
The company doesn’t clearly state a worldview on their website. In my opinion this would be considered a neutral worldview. Secular homeschoolers would be comfortable with this program as I didn’t find any Christian/Biblical content in the lessons. I also didn’t find any content that Christians would be uncomfortable with in the lessons I reviewed. Keep in mind that I didn’t review every lesson from every grade level, but I am still pretty confident in saying that I think anyone can be comfortable using this program, no matter what your belief system is.
Things to Consider
The math courses are completely online, so a reliable internet connection is a must in order to use this math program.
Another thing to consider is that the program only goes up to Algebra 1. The company plans to make this a complete K-12 program at some point, but I don’t know the timeline for that. It also goes directly from 6th grade to pre-algebra, with no other seventh grade math option available. I know some parents like to wait until 8th grade for pre-algebra as some kids need a little more time to mature before jumping into the higher level math concepts. This is definitely not true for everyone though, but it is something to consider when exploring this math option.
Summary
The Family Math Package from A+ Interactive Math is an excellent option for an independent, completely online math program. If you have a student in grades 1-6, or students who are ready for Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, that like to work independently then this is a good math option. A+ Interactive math is mastery based and includes everything you need for a complete math curriculum. The program will work for any worldview as there is no religious or overly secular content.
My kids have never done well with online math programs. The more I dive into this program though, the more I am impressed with how well thought out and complete the program is. I find the lesson plans to be practical and just the right amount of work. The built in exams and cumulative reviews help ensure your child is retaining the material. The parent dashboard is easy to navigate and it is easy to see your child’s progress. I am so impressed with this program I am actually thinking about how I can make it work for my non-independent, non-mathy children. This is a program I definitely feel good about recommending for an independent math curriculum option.
