Now that summer is here, it is time to shed the socks and boots and pull out our favorite sandals and flip flops. If you’re like me, your feet aren’t exactly beautiful after months of entrapment in thick socks and winter boots. To make things even worse, I am a runner and between the heal cracks and calluses, let’s just say my feet need a bit of prep work before making any public appearances. If you don’t have the time or money to go get a professional pedicure to prep your feet for summer sandals, then you can get your feet ready at home with this DIY essential oil foot scrub. And I won’t even try to get you to join an MLM!

DIY Foot Scrub Options

There are plenty of options you can use when making an essential oil foot scrub. You don’t have to strictly follow any recipe to get results. As long as you have an exfoliator and a carrier oil you have what you need to make a DIY foot scrub.

The Exfoliator

Exfoliators are the part of the foot scrub that makes it a scrub. The exfoliator is the mechanism that helps scrub off all the dead skin that accumulated over winter. You can use pretty much anything that has a little bit of a rough texture as an exfoliator. The two most common types for a foot scrub are salt or sugar. Salt is a little bit rougher and can be uncomfortable if you have any scratches or blisters on your feet, but it gets the job done. Keep that in mind when choosing your exfoliator. Sugar is gentler, but not quite as effective in my opinion. You can also get creative and use things like coffee or oats to exfoliate.

Carrier Oil

For the purposes of this foot scrub, carrier oil is really any type of vegetable based oil. Coconut, jojoba, avocado or even olive oil will work. The oil will help make your feet feel soft, but the exfoliator is still the star of the show. Use whichever carrier oil you prefer.

Essential Oils

I love peppermint oil for foot scrub. It is refreshing and makes your feet fell alive. You can choose any combination of your favorite oils, just be careful about using citrus oils if you are planning to wear sandals as they can be phototoxic depending on how they are processed. My favorite combination is peppermint and bergamot. Bergamot can be phototoxic, but I use bergamot from Plant Therapy as theirs is not. No matter what brand you buy, always check with the manufacturer to see if it is safe. Sometimes processes and formulations change so always do your homework and get the most up to date information.

My favorite essential oil brand is Plant Therapy. They are high quality oils (in my non-expert opinion), you can buy them on Amazon, and you don’t need to sign up for any clubs to use them. They are fairly priced too.

Extra Stuff

You can add extras to your foot scrub to make it to your liking. Adding a capsule or two of vitamin e oil will give added skin benefits. If you want a cleansing scrub you can add a little castile soap. Dried herbs are also a great addition if you want to fancy it up a little bit, and they smell amazing.

How to Use Essential Oil Foot Scrub

The first step is to clean and soak your feet. If you are using this in the shower, stand in the water long enough so your calluses soften a little bit. Put about a tablespoon of scrub on one foot and massage for as long as you want. The longer the better. Make sure to focus on your heel and the ball of your foot and any other areas that need extra attention. Rinse and repeat on the other foot.
