Summer is here at My Homeschool with a View and I am in the process of recapping my son’s freshmen year and getting ready for tenth grade. We made some changes part way through the year as some things that worked for middle school just weren’t working for high school. One of the best changes we made was switching to an online math curriculum for high school.
Homeschool Mom Math Anxiety
I have no problem admitting that math is not my favorite subject. In fact, I don’t remember most, if any, high school math. This is actually a common concern I hear from other homeschool moms. High school math seems to be the dreaded subject that causes anxiety for a lot of us.
A couple of months into this school year, I realized that our old math curriculum was confusing both my son and me. This same curriculum worked well for elementary and middle school, but once he started algebra it became clear we needed to make a change. I am never opposed to Switching Homeschool Curriculum, but I wasn’t thrilled to switch two months into freshmen year.
Choosing an Online Math Curriculum
I know myself as a homeschool teacher. Having some sort of video based lessons for Algebra is a requirement for my homeschool. Math is not a subject that I am strong at teaching, but it’s okay. There are plenty of resources available to help moms like me with weaker subject areas.
Last year, I wrote You Can Homeschool Even If You are Not a Math Expert and we had the opportunity to try CTCMath at that time. While my kids and I really like CTCMath, my son made the choice to stay with our original curriculum choice, mainly because it was a familiar program for us. When that curriculum didn’t work out for Algebra, we opened up the Algebra 1 lessons in CTCMath. We haven’t looked back.
Switching to CTCMath
Our original plan was just to use CTCMath videos to help explain concepts in our other curriculum. Like I stated earlier, I wasn’t thrilled about needing to make a switch two months into the year. CTCMath explains concepts in such a straight forward manner.
The video lessons break down each concept, step by step and are easy to understand. We also really like the fact that CTCMath lessons are short. The bite sized lessons make math less overwhelming for my non-mathy kid and his non-mathy mom.
Immediate Feedback with Online Math Curriculum
As my son started to watch the videos, he also started completing the lessons. After each video there are interactive questions so you can see how well you understand the concept. You know right away if the concept was caught as the questions are marked correct or incorrect as soon as you submit your answer.
This immediate feedback is a math game changer. This is the main reason he ended up fully switching to CTCMath. He doesn’t have to wait for me to grade his math lesson. His math grades improved greatly because of the immediate feedback! You even get virtual confetti when you score one hundred percent.
Comparing Online Math Courses
As a veteran homeschool mom and blogger, I look at a lot of different homeschool curriculum. Other online math courses just aren’t as straight forward and complete as CTCMath. The lessons jump right in and stay on topic without a lot of fluff. When looking at other online curriculum, the lessons have so much extra stuff that they take twice as long to complete. I’m a straight forward type of mom and my kids also carry this trait, so we appreciate a straight forward program like CTCMath.
CTCMath is mastery based, which we love. We like learning the concept and moving on. Whether it takes one try or several to reach mastery, the adaptive lessons don’t get tedious as there is plenty of variety to the questions. There are also options and ways to build in more review as needed.
Make the Switch to Online Math Programs for High School
While finding curriculum for high school can seem intimidating, switching to an online math program is a game changer. CTCMath made completing Algebra 1 as simple as possible and we’re ready to face the challenge of Geometry next. And of course, we’ll be meeting this new challenge with CTCMath.
