2024 Post Update

This is the first post I wrote for My Homeschool with a View back in 2019! I have learned a ton and hopefully write better posts now. Here is a cleaned up version of our 6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum.

Sixth Grade Homeschool Math

Math U See Zeta
This is our second try with Math U See. In second grade Carter tried Beta and in many ways it was a good fit. The issue we found with Math U See is that their complete mastery approach means that they focus on one topic for a year, but that one topic gets to pretty advanced levels. We were in Beta and the process of multi digit addition and subtraction became too much for him in second grade, but there are plenty of things about this program that work for him. Now we are back with MUS and it is going very well. I plan to stick with this for him until he graduates.

Writing/Grammar

Essentials in Writing
We love EIW!  This is our third year with EIW and it has been a great fit. The 4th, 5th and 6th grade levels repeat the same concepts with more depth each go round, which is great for mastery. Carter is requesting a change for next year, but EIW is a program I will jump back to in a heartbeat if needed. He still likes it, but wants a change of scenery so to speak.

Spelling

Apples and Pears
This is the only spelling program that really works for him, and doesn’t feel like complete torture for both of us.

Science

Sonlight Science E
Carter loves science but we’ve had trouble in the past finding the right one. We are very happy with SL science. I let each of my kids pick their levels this year based on interest and it’s going well. I’ll talk more on Sonlight later.

Reading

Christian Light Education
I really like CLE reading because it gets done and I feel like it helps me make sure he is learning what he needs.

History

Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation and Epistles (Simply Charlotte Mason)
This is an excellent history study. It is very flexible and easy to implement. We really enjoy the main book this uses A Castle With Many Rooms.

We do several outside activities and enrichments. One of our favorite enrichment subjects this year is History of Classical Music from Beautiful Feet Books.
