As homeschool moms, it can seem like we are constantly juggling something. Between our kids’ activities and managing home, it can be a lot. I can personally attest to the fact that staying organized can feel like an uphill battle, as we  juggle multiple responsibilities. However, by creating a family command center, you can establish a centralized hub for managing schedules, tasks, and important information. In other words, you can stay organized as a homeschool mom.

In this post, let’s explore some organizational tips to help you set up an efficient and effective family command center for your household that will streamline your family’s daily routines.

Choose the Right Location for Your Family Command Center

Select a central and easily accessible location in your home for your command center. Popular spots include the kitchen, entryway, or home office. Ensure that it’s visible to all family members and easily reachable, making it convenient for everyone to utilize.

My husband and I have office areas in our basement and I have tried to make this our command center, but it really doesn’t work. It doesn’t take long to realize that we need an organizational space on the main level where we will see it.

Essential Components for a Family Command Center

Determine what elements are essential for your household command center based on your family’s needs. Common components include a calendar for tracking appointments and events, a to-do list or chore chart, a meal planner, and a bulletin board for important reminders and notes.

I find using magnet boards on the side of our refrigerator helpful for keeping schedules, meal plans and grocery lists. I don’t like things looking cluttered and since it isn’t front and center it keeps a low profile.

Keep Your Command Center Simple

Avoid cluttering your command center with unnecessary items. Keep it streamlined and focused on the most important information and tasks. Use labels, color-coding, or categories to organize different sections and make it easy to navigate.

Utilize Wall Space

Maximize vertical space by utilizing wall-mounted organizers, shelves, or chalkboards to keep your command center functional and visually appealing. This not only saves valuable counter or desk space but also keeps important documents and supplies within reach.

I like using low profile, wall-mounted containers to keep important papers and mail that we need to hold onto. They don’t take up much space, and we can fit them into a little nook that is out of the way.

Stay Consistent with Household Organization

Establish a routine for updating and maintaining your command center regularly. Set aside a specific time each week to review and update calendars, meal plans, and to-do lists. Encourage family members to contribute and keep the system up to date.

This is something I am still working on, but ideally this happens once a week. That is the ideal. I might need to Atomic Habits this one so it happens consistently.

Personalize Your Family Command Center

We are more likely to engage with something if it looks pretty. Make your command center reflective of your family’s unique style and personality. Add photos, inspirational quotes, or decorative elements to make it inviting and visually appealing. Encourage family members to contribute their own personal touches to create a sense of ownership and investment in the system.

Regularly Evaluate and Adjust Organization Methods

When you first start to implement organizational systems, you won’t know what is going to work for you or not. Just like finding your homeschool style can take time and adjustment, so can finding your organizational style.

Periodically reassess your command center to ensure that it continues to meet your family’s evolving needs. Identify any areas that may need improvement or adjustment and make changes accordingly. Just like you should be confident switching your homeschool curriculum when it is not working for you, switch up your organizational system until you find what works. Flexibility is key to maintaining an effective organizational system (and homeschool).
