Every year on the Saturday before Christmas, we declare a family baking day. We spend an entire day baking dozens of Christmas treats to deliver to the neighbors. As with so many things, COVID is going to change what this looks like this year. We probably won’t be delivering homemade treats to the neighbors, but we will find other ways to love and serve this year.

We want to share one of our favorite Christmas treats with you, Pretzel Hugs. I have no idea where these treats originally came from. I have been making them for years and they are all over the internet. These pretzel treats are so simple to make and they are perfect for getting the kids involved.

You will need to gather a few supplies to make these:

Hershey Kisses or Hugs – We like the Candy Cane Kisses for a Christmas treat, but use whatever variety you prefer.

Pretzel Snaps (squares) or Twists (mini) – Either one of these shapes work well for this.

Red and Green M&M’s – The milk chocolate variety are the perfect size.

Cookie Sheet – Cover with foil or parchment paper. A small cookie sheet is best but any size will work. If you use a bigger one, don’t completely fill it. You have to work pretty fast on the final step and the more you have on the sheet, the faster you have to work.

Once you gather your supplies lay your pretzels out on the cookie sheet. Keep these in a single layer. Feel free to snack as you go.

Next you will need to place unwrapped Kisses on top of the pretzel. Unwrapping the candy is a great way to incorporate the kids.

Place these in a 300 degree oven and check often. You want the Kisses to get glossy and soft, but not melted. This only takes a couple minutes.

As soon as you take them out of the oven, start pressing the M&Ms into the Kisses. You need to move kind of fast for this step so the chocolate stays soft.

Once you have all of your pretzels topped with M&Ms, place them in the fridge or freezer to allow the chocolate to set up.

And that’s it. These are some of the easiest treats to make and everyone loves the combination of salty, sweet, and minty all at the same time. These package up nicely into treat bags if you want to give some as gifts.

Whether you eat these Pretzel hugs yourself, or give them away to friends or family, I hope you enjoy them as much as  we do!
