It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I love everything about the Christmas season, the decorations, beautifully lit neighborhoods, Christmas cookies and hot chocolate. It all makes for my favorite time of year. Even though we take a homeschool break for the whole month of December, we still love read alouds.

Our favorite Christmas books have become as much of a part of our Christmas traditions as Christmas carols and lighting the tree. I started collecting these books and reading them to my boys when they were tiny. Now that they are older, they still have a great fondness for these treasures. Many of our favorites are picture books because the boys were so little when we started this tradition and they still enjoy them. You are never too old for picture books.

I highly recommend adding some great books to your holiday traditions. Here are our top five favorite Christmas Read Alouds.

The First Christmas Night

This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of the birth of Jesus, in the style of the traditional Night Before Christmas. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I saw this book in an after Christmas clearance bin at an old bookstore. I didn’t buy it and I spent years regretting that decision. I couldn’t remember the name of the book and I Googled everything I could think of to find this book. Then a couple years ago, I was looking through a book catalog, and I found it after years of searching.

Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho!

We love all of the Click, Clack books. These are funny stories where a mischievous duck is the star of the show. Don’t expect to read a great piece of literature with this book, but it is still worth reading.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

This one is a classic about a family of trouble-maker children that decide to join the local church’s Christmas pageant. Things don’t go as planned, but the true meaning of Christmas is learned in the process.

Mooseltoe

This one is hilarious! Moose is a good dad that wants to make Christmas “Perfectly perfect” for his kids. When they have no Christmas tree he comes up with a VERY creative way to solve the problem. For those familiar with Charlotte Mason Education, this book is the ultimate twaddle, but we love it.

Turkey Claus

Another funny one! Turkey is trying to save himself from becoming Christmas dinner. He comes up with some clever costumes but everyone can see through his disguises. How does he save himself? I won’t give that away, but I will tell you no turkeys were harmed in the making of the book and Turkey lives to see another holiday!

Those are My Top Five Favorite Christmas Read Alouds. We have a much bigger collection of Christmas stories, but these are definitely the most beloved. Do you incorporate books into your Christmas traditions? I would love to read about some of your favorite titles!
