Homeschool moms learn really quickly that sometimes homeschooling requires a change of plans. You can begin the year with a great plan, only to have to pivot midway through the year. This is how our homeschool year went and in January, we realized that we needed to pivot big time when it came to my ninth grader’s homeschool science.

Switching homeschool curriculum mid-year during high school is definitely not an ideal situation. The original plan was to outsource to a homeschool co-op. When they didn’t deliver what was promised in the form of Biology labs, I had to somehow redeem our year and my son’s transcript. This is where online labs from Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science came to our rescue.

Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science Biology and Chemistry

I made a quick change in January with the hope that my son could finish Biology by the end of the year. Since I did a previous review of Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science, we decided to jump right into the life prep Biology. My original plan for the year was to have my son do this course for science anyway, but since we joined a co-op we had to use a different curriculum that we ended up not liking. It was a great choice to switch to the Life Prep Biology Course.

My son completed this course pretty quickly so he jumped right into the Life Prep Chemistry. He was happy that he could complete both this year. When it comes to science he appreciates being able to get it done and check it off the list.

Even though he completed these courses quickly, they are thourough and complete courses. They are also very engaging which is a big part of why he got both sciences done this year.

Homeschool Biology with Online Labs

Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science offers online virtual labs. My son LOVES the online labs. In his first lesson, he was given instructions on how to blow up the lab – virtually of course. Science labs are fun without wreaking actual havoc and destruction.

In addition to causing explosions in the lab, all of the traditional assignments you would expect in a Biology course, including dissection are included in the online lab.

The virtual labs walk you step by step through each assignment. There is never a moment of trying to figure out what you are supposed to do. It even teaches you how to write up a lab report.

Homeschool Chemistry with Online Labs

My son really enjoyed the Life Prep Chemistry. This is the subject he would do first every day. The online virtual labs are the highlight of Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science and I love that we could do chemistry without the open flames and fire extinguisher.

I will admit that subjects like chemistry don’t excite me as a homeschool mom. Giving my kids the opportunity to learn from people like Mr. Landry who is not only an expert in this field, but also passionate about science is a huge help to me in my homeschool.

Greg Landry Homeschool Science for College Prep

We chose the Life Prep Biology and Chemistry. These two courses are not considered college prep courses, but I don’t think there will be any problem for us going into a freshmen college class after taking these two courses. They aren’t the most rigorous science courses, but I think sometimes rigorous is counterproductive to learning. Since my son really enjoyed the classes and labs, he was engaged and he learned.

In addition to the Life Prep courses, Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science offers options that are college prep. If your child enjoys a rigorous academic path, then you can choose those. Mr. Landry is a thorough and engaging teacher and I’m confident his courses can prepare students for a more academic focused college prep program.

Online Labs or Hands-On Labs

As a non-sciency homeschool mom I am all about the convenience of online homeschool science labs. I feel like they cover all the bases without needing an expensive list of supplies. There’s also the fact that all explosions are virtual and don’t happen in my very real kitchen.

That being said, I definitely think there is benefit to hands on labs. The great thing about having our bases covered with online labs is we can still choose to do some hands on labs.

We will probably do a real dissection at some point and my son wants to do some DNA and blood typing experiments. The wonderful thing is, we can do just those things. Since all of the labs are already done, there is no pressure to complete a big list of hands on experiments. The online labs give us the opportunity to check the box and get it done, while still allowing the freedom to complete the hands on work that interests us.

I’m sure you can tell that I really like these science courses. The convenience of the online labs is just what we needed to get our homeschool science this year back on track after the disaster it was turning into with the co-op class. I am very grateful that this curriculum is available and I happily recommend this one to anyone looking for an engaging and flexible curriculum.
