Since it is January, I thought it would be a good time to give an update on how things are going with our homeschool this year. I posted about our seventh grade and fifth grade homeschool curriculum choices at the beginning of the year. Anybody who knows me, knows that I am not loyal to any certain curriculum and I have no problem changing what is not working. So, what did we keep and what did we switch this year?

Seventh Grade

We have changed NOTHING for seventh grade! This is a big deal because we normally make at least little changes. Carter is doing well with all of his subjects and is enjoying working mostly independently. We will probably change a few things up next year for eighth grade, but right now the plan is to finish the year with what we started. Here is a quick recap of what we’re using for seventh grade.

Math U See

Sonlight History/Bible/Literature F

Sonlight Language Arts

Sonlight Science

Spelling You See

Various Tech/Computer Classes

Fifth Grade

We made a lot of changes for fifth grade. I quickly realized that the Sonlight curriculum I got for Peyton was just a really bad fit for him. This is one of those decisions I made where I should have known better. I knew it probably wouldn’t be a good fit for him, but I like literature rich curriculum and wanted the convenience of getting the box full of books and having it all planned out for me. It only took a few weeks for me to realize my mistake, and I am thankful for Sonlight’s VERY generous return policy.

I ended up switching Peyton to mostly Master Books Curriculum. He was already using a few Master Books subjects so I filled in what we didn’t have. Master Books is about the farthest thing from a literature rich curriculum you can get, but it is a good fit for Peyton and I fill in with good books as needed. The best part is that Master Books was about a quarter of the price of Sonlight. Here is our updated fifth grade curriculum.

Various Resources and Tech Classes for Science

Mom Selected Books for Literature (Mostly from Beautiful Feet Books)

Things are going well and I feel like this has been a very productive homeschooling year. I always tell people not to be married to a curriculum. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to make changes, even part way through the year. As long as your kids are learning, it’s okay to change course as needed.
