We all need some fresh homeschooling inspiration from time to time. Whether you are a seasoned homeschool mom or about to start the adventure, we can all use fresh ideas and some inspiration.
At the top of my reading list this summer is the book Teach: Creating Independently Responsible Learners by Dennis DiNoia. You might recognize the author as the man behind Mr. D Math. Dennis DiNoia brings his years of teaching in person and online classes to you in this inspirational, engaging, and easy to read book.
Learn How to Homeschool a Different Way
The ideas in Teach by Dennis DiNoia encourage homeschool parents to think outside the box. Many of the suggestions in Teach are principles that I have implemented in my homeschool. For me there was much trial and error and finding what works. I appreciate that the ideas in the book articulate so well and present a practical approach to homeschooling a different way. Reading Teach will help you avoid some of the homeschooling trial and error I have had to go through.
In Teach, Dennis DiNoia presents common sense practices that will help you create independently responsible learners. I like how this concept of independence is presented in the book. In my observation, many homeschool parents have the idea that they want to create independent learners. But much of the time that looks like handing kids a textbook and telling them to learn. Teach presents this concept in a way that balances the responsibility of the educator to guide the education, while encouraging the student to take responsibility in receiving the education.
Excellent Reading for Homeschool Families
As I was waiting to get free time to read Teach, my fifteen year old son picked the book up from the coffee table and began reading. He immediately engaged with Dennis DiNoia’s stories of classroom teaching, and learning to think outside of the box.
My son, Carter, has the opportunity to tutor some fellow homeschoolers in coding. He plans to use some of the methods taught in Teach with his students.
Later, as I began the first chapter, my fifteen year old interrupted my reading because he was so excited to discuss the ideas in the book. The first thing he said to me was Mom, isn’t it so good! And he’s right. It really is, so good.
Learn to Be a Better Homeschool Teacher
As parents, we want to be a good example and model for our children what it looks like to be teachable and willing to learn. There is always room for improvement and learning, even as adults. This is an example I try to set for my kids. Teach is an excellent tool to help us become better homeschool teachers, and in turn, our kids get to see us growing and improving right along with them.
Final Thoughts on Teach by Dennis DiNoia
Teach by Dennis DiNoia is an engaging read that will help spark new ideas for your homeschool. I think the book put into words the ideas that I have tried to implement over the last ten years of homeschooling. It made my ideas make more sense and it even helped my son understand the way I do things as his teacher. He now understands why I tell him to look up answers in the answer key for difficult concepts. Reading teach gave both of us a different homeschool perspective.
As you are wrapping up your summer and beginning a new homeschool year, grab a copy of Teach by Dennis DiNoia. It is a quick, easy read, but I am confident you will get some fresh perspective and inspiration from it.
