In honor of Grandparents’ Day, I thought it would be a good time to come up with some fun homeschool projects to help us appreciate and celebrate grandparents. I have such fond memories of time spent with my grandparents, and I have a lifetime of stories to help me piece together our family history. I am grateful to have my parents living close by, so my kids can grow up around grandparents.  Hopefully they grow up with a strong sense of family heritage and history because of it. Here are some fun ideas to keep track of our family history and celebrate the grandparents in our lives.

Write It Down

Be intentional about having your kids write down their stories and memories. While we hope grandparents will be in our kids’ lives for a long time, we know they won’t be here forever. Having a written history to pass down is so valuable. This would make a great homeschool writing assignment too.

It doesn’t just have to be stories either. You can write down grandma’s famous fudge recipes and save notes from grandparents to kids, even the little silly ones. I have a cookbook my grandma gave me when I was a teenager. It was from an organization she was part of so she contributed recipes to this book. One day as an adult, years after my grandmother passed away, I found a yellow post it note with a message she had written for me when she gave me the cookbook. The content of the note was nothing significant, but I am so happy to still have her written words in my cookbook.

Create a Family Tree

This is a fun project your kids can do with their grandparents. If grandparents don’t live close by, you can help them fill in pictures and information. There are plenty of family tree ideas floating around on the internet. If you prefer to use a pre-made template, here is a great one from My Teaching Library. If you want to work on a more detailed family history, you can try this Family Tree Memory Keeper workbook. Peyton did a family tree project a few years ago and he drew pictures of what he thought his great, great, great grandparents probably looked like. It was a fun project for him and we got some really cute pictures out of it.

Grandparent Interview

A grandparent interview is such a fun idea to help our kids learn about their grandparents. My kids know their grandparents as the fun people who spoil them rotten, but an interview is a great way to learn about who they were before they were grandparents. You can have your kids come up with a list of questions on their own, or you can find a premade list. This list from Family Tree Magazine can help you get started.

Write Letters

Everyone loves snail mail! Grandparents especially love getting letters from their grandkids. Have your kids write letters, draw pictures, or even bake their favorite cookies and send them to their grandparents. My kids have a stack of stamped and addressed envelopes so they can send letters and pictures to my father in law. Having the envelopes ready to go puts them in charge of the project and they can send mail whenever they feel like it. Their grandpa loves getting notes and drawings from them.

Whether your kids have grandparents close by or far away, or even if their grandparents are no longer living, let’s take the time to be grateful for who they are and celebrate their role in our lives.

Books about Grandparents

I love to incorporate books into the big and small special days throughout the year. Here are a few fun grandparent books, in honor of grandparents day.
