Planning for homeschooling high school feels like entering the homeschool big leagues. We made it through the easy part of homeschooling, now we are entering the part of homeschooling that really counts. As intimidating as this homeschool phase can seem, there are many tools that can help. One of those tools I have been exploring is online high school classes.
Using online classes can make the process of homeschooling high school easier on the homeschool parent. As I am approaching the high school years, I want all of the resources to make sure I am setting my son up for success. Here are some of the things I am excited about as I explore online classes.
Online Classes Offer Opportunities for Group Participation
One of my goals for my upcoming freshman is to find him more opportunities to participate in a social learning environment. Homeschoolers don’t always get the chance to experience group learning, or working as a team with other students to complete a project. But I don’t want to neglect this important life skill.
With live online classes, homeschooled high schoolers have the opportunity to work in a group environment while still enjoying the comfort and safety of being at home. Virtual classrooms allow for homeschooled students across the country, or even across the world, to learn teamwork and how to work with someone who might not share your perspective on things. This type of social learning environment is an important step in preparing our kids for college and life beyond our homeschool.
Teaching Help for Advanced Subjects: Math and Science
Anytime I talk to parents about which high school subjects they are most intimidated to teach, nine times out of ten the answer is math or science. For me, science is the high school subject I am least excited to teach.
For some parents, bringing in professional help for certain subjects or AP classes is essential to their success in preparing their children for higher education. Using online classes for homeschooling high school provides the benefit of a professional teacher for subjects you choose without enrolling in a full time school program.
Earning College Credit While in High School
Those that know my homeschool story, know that earning college credit in high school has been part of our homeschool plan since the very beginning. I am not yet ready to send my son to a brick and mortar college yet, but I am still wanting opportunities to have him earn college credit in high school.
Online programs offer opportunities for dual enrollment. So, if our kids are academically ready for college level classes, but maybe not quite ready for the adult environment of a college campus, online classes are the perfect solution. They offer the balance of college academics and a head-start on earning college credit, with a comfortable and familiar home learning environment.
Teacher Recommendations for College
If our kids want to enter into a competitive college or program, having letters of recommendation can make a big difference. Online classes, with an outside teacher, give our kids an opportunity to participate and be known by someone who could potentially give them a college recommendation.
Working with a teacher in an online setting may give our kids the chance to shine in a way they wouldn’t otherwise be able to. For parents and homeschool students who feel like this is important for their future goals, online classes may offer this opportunity.
Using Online Classes for Career Readiness
Not every homeschooled high schooler is college bound. I know several homeschoolers who went straight into successful careers directly from high school. Online classes for high school are not just for college prep. There are many careers that online classes can prepare you for.
If your homeschooled high schooler is not planning to go to college, I recommend finding classes in fields where they can earn professional certifications. Coding is a great example of a field where there are many professional certifications that can lead to great jobs.
My high schooler’s passion in life is coding and we are definitely adding online coding classes to his high school plan.
