There are many unique and valid reasons to make the decision to homeschool. As with most things, different families may have similar reasons, but it usually comes down to a personal decision.

Remember 2020 when everyone found themselves homeschooling, at least to some extent? For most, the reason for homeschooling was that it was the only option. Others jumped in and found they love it.

No matter how your homeschooling adventure begins, it is always good to reflect on why you began or why you continue to homeschool.

Here are five great reasons to homeschool or consider homeschooling your child.

Reason to Homeschool 1: Tailor Education to Your Specific Child

We all know that public and even private schools tend to have crowded classrooms and education is aimed at the kids in the middle. This means that if your child is above or below the mid-line, they risk being left behind or not challenged.

Homeschooling allows parents the opportunity to provide a tailor made education with their unique child in mind. Does your child need math with short video lessons? You can give them that. Are they way ahead in language arts and behind in math? They can do different levels in those subjects.

Reason to Homeschool 2: Focus on Academics

There is a reason why America is behind the rest of the world in academic subjects. The school system has taken such a turn toward psychosocial education that academics tend to fall behind.

Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to build a strong academic foundation in our kids. Since we aren’t caught up in teaching all of the extra fluff that comes with public education, it takes less time to lay this academic foundation.

Reason to Homeschool 3: Pursue Interests

The great thing about being able to accomplish more academically in less time is that there is time to pursue other interest your kids may have. It gets even better when you realize they aren’t burning themselves out.

Whether your kids are into sports, music, science, geography, or anything else, homeschooling affords them the time to pursue their passions.

Reason to Homeschool 4: Build Confidence and Independence

Have you ever heard your child tell you they are bad at a certain subject? It is totally unnecessary for a struggling learner to feel like they don’t measure up. Yet in our education system that is based on grade and achievement, this is often the feeling our kids have.

Homeschooling gives our kids the opportunity to build confidence. My fifteen year old told me that he is more confident to try new things. If something doesn’t work, there is no failing or bad grade hanging over his head. He can simply move on and try it a different way next time.

This type of growth mindset simply can’t blossom when you have the permanence of bad grades or report cards in front of you.

Independence also ties into this. Our kids don’t have to be told what, where, when and how to do something. In my mind, this is the biggest flaw of institutional education. It takes confidence to be an independent learner and thinker. And in my mind, that’s the ultimate goal of homeschooling.

Reason to Homeschool 5: Instill Your Own Values

Values, morality and faith beliefs should be instilled at home, by families. I believe schools have really lost their way and purpose, and have assumed the role that should belong to parents. Strong academic instruction also gets less time and focus because of it.

This is probably my strongest reason for continuing to homeschool for the last ten years. I love knowing the values being instilled in my children, and the values they are developing as they grow into autonomous individuals. They are truly independent learners and thinkers with strong core values.
